For the longest time ever, I avoided having a proper skin care routine. I never really understood the importance of it. I mean I knew it, but I procrastinated. There was always another day to do it unless people started noticing the dull skin. It got worse when a sales girl came up to me and asked me the reason why my skin looked so tired (I went to that particular store quite a lot of times so she could see it). And it was pretty much clear that things were evident now and I had to take a call.
Just like any other beginner, I would crib about how long it takes to follow the so-called rules of cleansing, toning and moisturizing my skin EVERY SINGLE DAY. It was difficult initially but I admit, it gave ahhmazingg results.
In fact, I have added an eye cream to my ritual. I cannot emphasize more on it. Over the years, I had developed dark circles and puffy eyes. It wasn’t that visible though, but visible enough for me to start doing something about it. I feel better much now. I feel more confident.
And the good news is now the same people and even some more come up to me and compliment me for my skin. It looks ‘clean’, and more importantly feels so good from the inside. What I’ve realized that we need to develop ‘our own’ routine rather than following the someone else’s and yes, there’s no shortcut here. I have tried a lot of toners and moisturizers in the process. But there are a few that I have stuck to as of now. These products do change as seasons change.
So now, I’ll take you through the entire process and the importance of the same.
This is the first step. We might not take this step seriously considering that we slept the whole night, and there was no way dirt could accumulate on your skin. But that’s wrong. What about the night cream you applied? It has to be thoroughly cleaned. In fact, night creams often come with a thick consistency, hence, need a religious cleansing. You can also use a micellar water first thing in the morning. Just put some on a cotton pad and clean your face. But I prefer using a face wash.
Face washes have to be chosen according to your skin type. People with dry skin should opt for cream based cleansers like The Body Shop Vitamin E Cream Cleanser or the Lakme Deep Cleanser Cleansing Milk. If you have an oily skin, use products that contain neem or tea-tree oil like The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wash. Tea-tree oil is known to help fight acne. You can use The Body Shop Deep Cleansing Seaweed Gel Wash if you have a combination skin. And finally, go for Kaya Sensitive Face Cleanser if you have a sensitive skin.
If you are performing this step at night, you should go for double cleansing if you wear makeup. First, use a makeup remover to remove your makeup and then go for an additional oil based product like a cleansing milk or an oil. You can use the ones that are available at your place, say coconut oil. This way, even the small residues of makeup will get removed efficiently.
Frankly speaking, this is something that I cannot live without. I need to use a toner every single day, twice. Once in the morning after cleansing and then in the evening after the same. It is one of the most underrated steps in the skincare regime. I’ll tell you why. When you are cleaning your face, the pores do get open and the dirt gets removed. But what if you don’t close those pores? The dirt will accumulate again and will lead to breakouts and acne.
How to use: Pour some toner on a cotton pad and gently apply it on your face in a sweeping motion. You can also go in the dabbing motion. Then there are mists that can be used for the same purpose. The application there will consist of just spraying it on the face, allowing it to dry. You can use green tea or rose water too. Again, if you have an oily skin, go for the product that has tea tree oil. Toners are bifunctional. Along with closing your pores, they do provide hydration. So, if you have a very dry skin, avoid toners that have alcohol. They tend to dehydrate your skin more.
When you go through the above two steps, sometimes, it so happens that the essential oils do get washed away from the face leaving it very dry. I often face this problem with my nose. I have a combination skin overall, but the skin over my nose is very very dry. It does become flaky at times. So, this makes it more important to apply a proper moisturizer to make your skin look and feel fresh and plump all the time. You can use the seaweed range from The Body Shop if you have a combination skin. Go for vitamin E creams if you have a dry skin and need intense hydration. There is a misconception that people with oily skin don’t need to use a moisturizer. But that’s not true. You definitely need to reduce oil levels but what about the hydration? That needs to be there at the right level. So yes, each and every person needs a moisturizer, according to the skin type. So, choose well. Sunscreen is also a very very important part of the routine.
After you apply the moisturizer, wait for a minute or two and then apply your favorite sunscreen.
There also comes an eye-cream, a serum and a lot more. But a beginner should first get used to these three steps and then move with other products or else you might get tired and leave the procedure altogether.
But I do admit there are days when I don’t want to do these things. And it’s okay. You can give yourself a break but not for long because consistency is the key.
